I was born into a family whose one member made a career out of being an athlete playing professional football which outside of Europe the term soccer would be used!
In the 1930’s my grandfather Samual Frederick Tilson played for Manchester City Football Club and in addition represented the England national team... He became most famous for his part in Manchester City's triumph win in the FA Cup Final 1934 where he scored two goals to one helping Manchester City beat Portsmouth.
Playing in the same team as Frank Swift... the first goalkeeper to captain England and also was well known for big hands were he could pick up a ball with one hand without dropping it yet in this match Frank was upset that he had conceded a goal before half time however being Frederick he had a sense of humour where he joked saying to Swift that he would make amends to the team's 1-0 half time shortfall by scoring two goals in the second half.
This he did, and Man City won by two goals to one, defeating Portsmouth to win the 1934 FA Cup!
Through his career he was unfortunate with injury on many occasions however when he gained full fitness on any given day he was one of the best forwards to wear a pair of football boots. Soon when Tilson retired from playing football he was on the staff for 21 years where he became second team coach, chief scout and was caretaker manager!
